FDM or SLA — Which One Should You Choose?

24 August 2026 · IronPlast.eu

The two most common 3D printing technologies are each ideal for different jobs. In short: FDM is strong and economical for larger parts, while SLA delivers fine detail and a smooth surface for smaller parts.

FDM in brief

Fused deposition modeling, with a wide range of materials (PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, TPU, PA12, PA12-CF), a large build volume, and an affordable price — the ideal choice for functional parts and series production. See: FDM 3D printing.

SLA in brief

Cures UV resin, producing extremely fine detail and a smooth surface at a smaller size — ideal for aesthetic and precision parts. See: SLA / resin 3D printing.

How to decide?

Factor FDM SLA
Size large small
Surface layered smooth
Strength high, material-dependent medium
Price affordable higher
Typical use functional parts, series detailed, aesthetic pieces
